Serving as the State Representative for Michigan’s 73rd District, and currently, the State Senator for Michigan’s 28th District has been an honor and a privilege that few have encountered. I have been both humbled by and grateful for the opportunity to help so many Kent County families during my service in the state legislature.
Today, I am writing to let you know about my candidacy for Kent County Treasurer. I filed to run in April but with so much going on, the timing just was not right for a big fuss. There is still so much work to be done for West Michigan.
I am excited about this new prospect. I believe that my experience as the senate appropriations subcommittee Chair of the state health and human services budget has given me a firm footing to manage the county treasurer’s office. As a previous small business owner, managing payroll and staff is something I am familiar with. And as a former township supervisor, I learned the intricacies of local government. I am confident in my experience.
Furthermore, the economic impacts of COVID-19 are widespread and yet to be fully realized. It is important that we work to protect Kent County’s Triple-A (AAA) bond rating as we move into these unchartered financial waters. By protecting our bond rating, we can keep taxes low. I am committed to the fiscal responsibility I have demonstrated as a legislator, local elected official, and business owner.
However, as with my other races, I cannot do this alone. The rules of campaigns are changing amidst COVID-19 and we do not know what things will look like tomorrow or in one, two, or six months. Regardless, you can count on my steady leadership well into the future. Because there is so much happening daily in our state I want to assure you that I will remain fully committed to my service until I take office as County Treasurer. The campaign will not take away from my duties.
I hope I can rely on your support: financially, on social media, and networking with your friends and family. I look forward to “seeing” you over the next five months on the campaign trail, whether virtually or in real life. If I can answer any questions, please feel free to reach out to me at any time.
Again, thank you for your consideration and we will talk soon!
